Agreement on Climate Change in UAE and Pakistan

The UAE and Pakistan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to tackle climate change and promote cooperation in the areas of environmental protection in accordance with their national legislation. Minister for Climate Change and Environment Maryam Bint Muhammad Al-Mahiri and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Malik Amin Aslam signed the agreement on the sidelines of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). The two countries will work together on climate and climate change, renewable energy, smart agriculture, drought management and environmental education and capacity building.

On the occasion, Al-Mahiri said that the UAE seeks cooperation with all countries to meet global challenges and multilateral diplomacy is a strategic priority of its future agenda. He added that the UAE and Pakistan have long-standing cooperation in many areas such as education, health, energy, infrastructure development, food security and the environment. The new understanding will help us enhance our mitigation and adaptation capabilities and work together to tackle climate change. Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Amin Aslam said that we are happy to take our already strong bilateral relations with the UAE to new heights. Through the agreement, we look forward to enhancing climate change mitigation measures, promoting joint efforts to protect the land and sea environment.

The two countries have agreed to jointly initiate new ecosystem rehabilitation measures and expand existing ecosystem rehabilitation measures in a way that promotes the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Rehabilitation. In addition, the two countries will facilitate the adoption of smart farming methods and renewable energy resources, develop drought management plans and promote ecological and desert tourism, training programs for ecological and meteorological experts. Will conduct and promote measures to protect the marine ecosystem and blue carbon. The UAE and Pakistan will also initiate an exchange of information on climate change between their educational institutions, co-operate in implementing innovative ideas and projects of educational institutions and conduct joint environmental research.
