Abu Dhabi bans the use of plastic shopping bags from June 1

The Environmental Authority in Abu Dhabi has decided to ban plastic shopping bags from June 1, 2022. A ban on reusable plastic bags is being imposed to improve the environment.

According to Emirates Allium, the authority further said that by the year 2024, the use of styrofoam-made cups, plates and food containers will also be phased out and a public campaign will be launched in this regard. Raise awareness of the dangers of using bottles, plates and food containers.

The details released by the Environmental Authority further said that an awareness campaign is also being launched to reduce the reliance of commercial establishments and market management on disposable plastic products. Will also be released.

The campaign of issuing warning notices will be carried out in big supermarkets so that implementation of this scheme can be started from there. Later notices will be issued to other vendors in this regard.

The Environmental Authority warns that plastic shopping bags, which are not properly disposed of after use, are a major cause of damage to the marine and terrestrial environment, killing more than one million seabirds.

Plastic shopping bags will be replaced by a number of reusable bags that are environmentally friendly. In this regard, an awareness campaign is being launched by the authority in society so that people can be aware of the harms caused by the use of other products in plastic bags. A survey conducted in 2019 stated that 11 billion plastic shopping bags are used annually in the UAE which is a huge number.
