The first Independence Cricket Final match was played between the team of Mayor Rochdale and the team of Pakistan Consul General at Rochdale Buffett Cricket Ground which was won by Mayor Rochdale’s team by three runs.

The first Cricket Independence Cup in Greater Manchester’s history was won by Mayor Rochdale XI by three wickets. The target of 145 runs was achieved on the first ball of the last ball. The special guest of the match was social entrepreneur Zahid Iqbal who distributed cups to both the teams.

Consul General at the Pakistan Consulate, Tariq Wazir, along with Mayor Rochdale Councilor Asim Rashid, inaugurated the Independence Cup for the first time in the history of Greater Manchester on August 14 at the Buffett Cricket Club ground in Rochdale.

The Pakistan Consulate cricket team was led by Consul General Tariq Wazir and Vice-Captain Commercial Trade Secretary Chaudhry Muhammad Akhtar and Mayor XI was led by Mayor Rochdale Councilor Asim Rashid. The match was arranged by Rochdale’s businessman Zahid Iqbal and social figure Hafiz Mudassir.

Consul General’s team scored 144 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Captain Consul General Tariq Wazir scored 18 runs.

Commercial and Trade Secretary Chaudhry Akhtar, the vice-captain of the Consul General’s team, said such activities should continue to bring the community together.

Mayor Rochdale Asim Rashid said that sports are very important for healthy activities. Deputy leader Rochdale Council Adalat Ali said that they are enjoying good sports and weather. Councilor Iftikhar also appreciated the performance of both teams.
