ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has expressed grave concern over the seizure of uranium material used in atomic bombs from smugglers in India.

In a statement issued from the Foreign Office, Pakistan said that the seizure of 7 kg of natural uranium (material used in the atomic bomb) from an unauthorized person in India has raised many questions.

A few days ago, police in Maharashtra arrested two people for illegally possessing 7 kg (15.4 pounds) of natural uranium.

The Homi Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Mumbai has also confirmed that the uranium recovered from smugglers is highly radioactive, while its value in the world market is about 29 2.9 million (PKR 440 million).

According to details, Maharashtra police, in the light of initial reports, conducted a sting operation a few days ago and arrested two smugglers named Jaggar Pandya and Abu Tahir.

Following the confirmation of radioactive uranium, a case was registered against the two men in Mumbai on Wednesday, while further investigation into the theft of the uranium is underway.

According to India’s official news agency, Press Trust of India, the two accused have been remanded in custody of the Anti-Terrorism Squad till May 12 after their appearance in a Mumbai court.

This is not the first case of theft of hazardous radioactive material in India, but even before that, in 2016, Maharashtra police had seized about 9 kg of uranium from the Thane suburb of Thane.
