{"id":6795,"date":"2021-06-22T10:56:15","date_gmt":"2021-06-22T10:56:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/undergroundnews.co.uk\/?p=6795"},"modified":"2021-06-22T10:57:40","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T10:57:40","slug":"european-union-launches-antitrust-investigation-against-google-over-online-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/undergroundnews.co.uk\/?p=6795&lang=en","title":{"rendered":"European Union launches antitrust investigation against Google over online ads"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Mishaal Arshad C.M Underground News.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Investigation will assess whether Google has violated EU competition rules by favouring its own online display advertising technology services.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Probe will also look into Google\u2019s announced plans to prohibit the placement of third party \u201ccookies\u201d on its Chrome browser.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>A Google spokesperson says the company \u201cwill continue to engage constructively with the European Commission to answer their questions.\u201d<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BRUSSELS: The European Union has initiated a wide-ranging antitrust investigation against Google Tuesday over concerns that it is forcing out rivals in the lucrative online advertising market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The investigation will \u201cassess whether Google has violated EU competition rules by favouring its own online display advertising technology services\u201d, a statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/undergroundnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/download-18-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"6796\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/undergroundnews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/download-18-2.jpg\" data-link=\"https:\/\/undergroundnews.co.uk\/?attachment_id=6796\" class=\"wp-image-6796\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The probe narrows in on an important slice of Google\u00b4s business model where over 80 per cent of the giant\u2019s revenue last year came from advertising, or $147 billion (124 billion euros).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are concerned that Google has made it harder for rival online advertising services to compete\u201d in display ad technology, said EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At issue is Google\u2019s largely unnoticed, but highly dominant technologies that serve as an intermediary or broker between advertisers and publishers online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The business was also at the heart of a recent case in France \u2014 brought by News Corp, French daily Le Figaro and Belgium\u2019s Groupe Rossel \u2013 that saw Google fined 220 million euros ($267 million).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As in France, the EU will try to determine whether Google gave preferential treatment to its own ad inventory technologies AdX and Doubleclick, but will also look at other aspects of its business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crucially, the probe will also look into Google\u2019s announced plans to prohibit the placement of third party \u201ccookies\u201d on its Chrome browser, a move that has angered some publishers and advertisers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Google spokesperson said the company \u201cwill continue to engage constructively with the European Commission to answer their questions and demonstrate the benefits of our products to European businesses and consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Mishaal Arshad C.M Underground News.
